It is unclear if Poulenc meant to write a bassoon sonata before his untimely death in 1963. Perhaps it was the thought of writing a bassoon sonata that killed him. 😉 Music Francis Poulenc, 1899-1963 Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, 1962. A native Parisian, Poulenc was born in 1899 at the dawn of modernism and emerged as a young, brash composer in the artistically fantastic 1920's. The French affection for the flute is brilliantly demonstrated in Francis Poulenc's virtuosic Sonata for Flute and Piano (1956). Each of the work's three movements is fluent and graceful in different ways. The first movement, Allegro malincolico, sounds sweetly sad rather than melancholy.
