Economic and Monetary Union takes the EU one step further in its process of economic integration, which started in 1957 when it was founded. Economic integration brings the benefits of greater size, internal efficiency and robustness to the EU economy as a whole and to the economies of the individual Member States. There have been other currency unions of course. There was a Latin Monetary Union in the 1870s which had a standard coinage as between Belgium, France, Italy and Switzerland, but that was not an economic and monetary union; a standard coinage is not a monetary union. There was no central bank controlling interest rates and exchange rates. The Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is an umbrella term for the group of policies aimed at converging the economies of member states of the European Union at three stages. .

The EU does involve not only the common market but also the coordination of economic policies between all member countries. The Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is not an end in itself.
